How long does it take to lighten dark hair dye? Oh,3 to 13 hours…

In 2011, InStyle reported that it took 13 hours to lighten an actor’s dyed hair. Two colourists in L.A. and N.Y. worked on her for over a period of 3 days to lighten her dyed auburn shade to a blonde one for a film role.  –It really can take this long to remove dark dye so don’t try to do this yourself or expect that a professional hair stylist can achieve it in a 2-hour appointment. (View InStyle’s photos and another one in 2012 that took 27 hours.)

The following set of photos are of hair I’ve lightened and corrected on a woman who had dark dye deposits and light patches from colouring it herself.  It took me 3 hours to lighten it to an even toffee colour.

Her hair wasn’t lightened in the 5 months between photos. The reddish tone faded to sunny blonde in the summer sun. –Unbelievable. During that time she used a spray-in, leave-in treatment I recommended to repair the fuzzy ends caused by the lightening process.

Though she’s an exception, it’s usually the case that dark dye won’t lift past reddish tones without hours of lightening and multiple formulas. Your hair will suffer less damage if I gently and gradually lighten it to blonde over a few visits spread out over a few months. It’s also more affordable this way because colour corrections can be unpredictably long and are charged by the hour.

Meanwhile at home you can help the blonding process by using a shampoo and conditioner that diminish brassy tones. I carry Blonde Angel because they contain flower extracts, natural softeners and keratin amino acids to brighten, moisturize and restore shine and elasticity to blonde hair.

They’re made from renewable and sustainable resources where possible, without sulphate and paraben and with 40% less plastic than other shampoo bottles. The lid is at the bottom so it allows you to use every last drop. Clients get a loyalty discount on this product.
